The world is confronted by major health challenges including pandemics, non-communicable diseases, and climate change impacts, exacerbated by economic pressures that hinder effective healthcare funding. Achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) requires sustainable financing to enhance health infrastructure and services, ultimately leading to more resilient health systems that ensure equitable access to necessary care without financial hardship.
At the 36th Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting in 2024, ministers committed to enhancing health system resilience across the Commonwealth, particularly for small and vulnerable states, to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and health security. They emphasised the need for strong, well-funded, and environmentally sustainable health systems to ensure equitable access to healthcare for everyone.
The 37th Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting will advance discussions on building resilient and equitable health systems through sustainable financing and will seek to expedite the outcomes of the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. This includes establishing a Commonwealth vision for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and mental health in preparation for the 2025 UN General Assembly, alongside actionable plans for healthy ageing.
